Barney McGlade
Mr. Barney McGlade, BA, M.Ed
I am a clinical and community psychologist with over 43 years of experience in therapy, assessments and interventions, community and group work, and training. I focus on mental health needs of both adults and children, including anxiety, stress, panic attacks, low mood, depression and trauma. I carry out ASC (autism spectrum conditions) and other assessments, and together with clients, develop individual interventions. I also work closely with people with different disabilities and their families.
When working together with clients, I use person-centred, solution-focused therapy, such as CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), motivational interviewing, community psychology and Rogerian practices. My approach is to work collaboratively with each client, in an atmosphere of acceptance, respect and empathy, as the client discovers and finds alternative and more positive ways to think and feel, leading to more positive action, greater self-esteem, and contentment. The influences of family, community, social values, attitudes and the environment are key elements in the process.
I provide a safe and empathic space for clients, whether in a face-to-face or online environment.
My work has covered a number of psychology fields, in Ireland and internationally, such as mental health and well-being, disability, autism spectrum condition, personal development, self-esteem, peer counselling, work related situations and coping strategies, training, education, child safeguarding, child development and parenting.
Additionally, I have extensive experience working in related fields such as humanitarian response and trauma, gender, intersectionality, LGBT+, inclusive community development, organizational mission/vision-setting, organizational management, inclusive budgeting, and human rights.
I have a B.A. Honours in Psychology and subsequent two years of clinical supervision, as well as Masters in Education. I am a member of the Psychological Society of Ireland and its Division of Clinical Psychologists.
