Margaret McElvaney-Smith

Psychotherapist & Chartered Psychologist

Margaret’s initial professional training and employment were in Social Work. She built on this by completing postgraduate professional training as a clinical / developmental psychologist, and specialised for 21 years in the area of working with children and adults who experienced developmental challenges, and their families. More recently, Margaret completed specialist training to Masters level in counselling and psychotherapy. She has been awarded the European Certificate of Psychotherapy by the European Association of Psychotherapy, and is an accredited member of the two main counselling / psychotherapy bodies in Ireland – Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP/ICP) and Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). She is a Chartered Psychologist of the Psychological Society of Ireland, specialising in Psychotherapy. Margaret’s current practice is dedicated to counselling and psychotherapy. She does not complete diagnostic psychological assessments or reports. Margaret’s counselling and psychotherapy training is Humanistic and Integrative, where respect for each individual person, personal responsibility, awareness and the pursuit of self realisation are key principles. Blocks to self realisation and fulfilment may be explored. These blocks may be associated with incomplete processing of one’s experiences – emotionally, cognitively, somatically, relationally and spiritually. Each person’s needs are individual and Margaret holds deep respect for clients’ own personal wisdom, and the need for her to attune to, facilitate and follow this in her work with clients. This work is facilitated in the context of a supportive, non-judgmental therapeutic relationship, where the therapist’s holding and receptive presence are paramount. Margaret considers this authentic presence and connection with clients to be at the heart of the work. Margaret aspires to be of support to individual, adult clients who may be experiencing struggles in their lives and/or in their personal psychological wellbeing. She aims to facilitate clients in processing and responding to the source of their difficulties in a manner that is compatible with clients’ own wishes, temperament and personal process.

Barney McGlade

Clinical & Community Psychologist BA, M.Ed

I am a clinical and community psychologist with over 43 years of experience in therapy, assessments and interventions, community and group work, and training. I focus on mental health needs of both adults and children, including anxiety, stress, panic attacks, low mood, depression and trauma. I carry out ASC (autism spectrum conditions) and other assessments, and together with clients, develop individual interventions. I also work closely with people with different disabilities and their families. When working together with clients, I use person-centred, solution-focused therapy, such as CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), motivational interviewing, community psychology and Rogerian practices. My approach is to work collaboratively with each client, in an atmosphere of acceptance, respect and empathy, as the client discovers and finds alternative and more positive ways to think and feel, leading to more positive action, greater self-esteem, and contentment. The influences of family, community, social values, attitudes and the environment are key elements in the process. I provide a safe and empathic space for clients, whether in a face-to-face or online environment. My work has covered a number of psychology fields, in Ireland and internationally, such as mental health and well-being, disability, autism spectrum condition, personal development, self-esteem, peer counselling, work related situations and coping strategies, training, education, child safeguarding, child development and parenting. Additionally, I have extensive experience working in related fields such as humanitarian response and trauma, gender, intersectionality, LGBT+, inclusive community development, organizational mission/vision-setting, organizational management, inclusive budgeting, and human rights. I have a B.A. Honours in Psychology and subsequent two years of clinical supervision, as well as Masters in Education. I am a member of the Psychological Society of Ireland and its Division of Clinical Psychologists.

My name is Kathy Hyland. I live in Cahir, Co. Tipperary. I have been running my private practice both from Cahir since 2014 and Limerick since 2017. I am currently working as an Associate of Oakwood Psychology Services in Limerick and with Employment Assisted Program Providers of counselling services such as Inspire, Towards Healing, Workplace Options, Telus/Morneau Shepell and Huntington’s disease. I am an experienced counsellor, with over 10 years’ experience in helping people overcome a myriad of life and health related issues to date. I have previously worked with “Lets Get Talking in Galway, Residential Addiction Rehabilitation Centres such as Cuan Mhuire, Bruree and Saoirse, Outpatient service in Limerick. I currently offer face to face, zoom or telephone counselling. I’ve worked through the platform of zoom and telephone since the beginning of Covid. This variety of options has proven most helpful to Clients from a geographical, time, family, physical disability/illness and work wise perspective. My therapeutic approach offers clients, first and foremost a non judgemental, safe space, whereupon I hope the client will learn to feel safe enough to be their most vulnerable self. I offer an empathetic listening service, which is holistic, person centred, supportive, encouraging and solution focused integrative model of treatment. I firmly believes in the quote “There go I, but for the grace of God” I combine my knowledge, wisdom, experience and training to date to provide a supportive, kind and compassionate listening ear, treating everyone as wholly individual, in their own right, so that they may tap into the courage and strength that lies within to “Change what they can, accept what they can’t and learn to live more creatively with what they cannot change”. I use a wide range of integrative and creative therapies in correlation with the client’s issues and needs such as CBT, SFBT, Motivational Interviewing, Gestalt, Psycho Education, Art/Colour therapies, the art of Mindfulness, Visualisation, Meditation, Spirituality, Biodynamics with self-care and stress relief strategies an important feature as part of the therapeutic approach also offered. I see the Client as the expert on themselves, I meet the Client where they are at, take their lead as to the direction, pace and level of emotional discomfort they are willing to express or experience. I journey, explore, collaborate with them on the issues that are causing them distress or anxiety, or perhaps consider what has or is not working for them in their lives right now. I help them to meet their pain, stay with their pain to help them to understand what it is expressing to them. I assist the Client to move through their pain, which informs them as to what might resolve the situation. We look at what tools or strategies might best deal with the problem, that are a good fit for them or try and help them make sense of their concerns or move to a new perspective or personal insight around the situation. And it might be that just talking it through, being heard and understood with empathy and compassion lessens the pressure and gives a welcome relief to the Client. I see Clients engaging in counselling, as offering themselves a great gift, as a life skills program can evolve, as a result of the personal development that can develop from this kind of engagement, into a person who is resilient, resourceful and has strategies to deal with whatever comes to test them. I help the Client recognize the importance of self-care, gradually over time they give themselves permission to put themselves first, asserting themselves as and when needed, learning to trust their own inner guiding compass, which over time allows them to believe in themselves. They begin to function from a better sense of self, having practiced loving care, encouragement, support, acknowledgement, promoting, best friending self to become best version of self, understanding and appreciating one’s uniqueness and talents. I am passionate, authentic and committed to my work, having a great interest in the unique personalities that present to my Clinic, knowing that with kind, caring, compassionate and genuine attention they can become the best version of themselves. Gradually help them to honour their own wisdom, tap into themselves, regain their confidence and control over their lives once more that they may feel they had lost. I look forward to meeting and working with you on whichever mode of counselling works best for you. Patrick O'Flaherty

Psychotherapist, MIACP.

Patrick is a graduate in Counselling & Psychotherapy from Middlesex
University. He is an accredited member of the IACP and follows their
code of ethics. As an integrative psychotherapist, he tailors his approach
to support the client's individual needs, aiding healing and personal
growth. He draws upon a variety of therapeutic interventions, including
person-centred, humanistic-existential, CBT (cognitive behavioural
therapy), psychodynamic, ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy),
polyvagal theory, systems theory, somatic, narrative, ecotherapy, and
mindfulness-based perspectives.
He has a particular interest in the concept of neurodiversity and has
completed a Specialist Diploma in Neurodiversity-Informed Practice
with The Greenane Centre. Neurodiversity-informed therapy views
forms of neurodivergence (ADHD, Autism, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, among
others) and neurodivergent traits as variations in human neurology
(neurotypes), representing differences in how we, as humans, process

and experience the world around us. Psychotherapy can provide a
supportive space to explore and understand the challenges that can arise
with neurodivergent traits, while also acknowledging the strengths and
unique perspectives that come with a different lens through which to see
the world.
Before joining the Oakwood team, Patrick worked with CAPS
Counselling and Psychotherapy Service, Let's Get Talking and PCI
Counselling Service. Patrick works with adults experiencing a variety of
personal and interpersonal issues, including but not limited to anxiety,
stress, depression, panic, bereavement, relationship difficulties, self-
esteem, life transitions, family conflict, work stress/burnout, attachment,
trauma, identity exploration, existential and spiritual inquiry.
In addition to Oakwood, Patrick also works in private practice in
Limerick City. He works both in-person and online (via Zoom and
WhatsApp), offering a compassionate and non-judgmental space to
collaborate with clients on life issues that can overwhelm us at times,
nurturing resilience, self-awareness, a greater sense of agency,
empowerment, and hope for the future.
Patrick has a strong interest in the creative arts and the healing power of
nature. He believes story and self-expression are intrinsic to the
psychotherapeutic process because story and narrative are central to

how we make sense of our lives. Neuroscience explains how our early
relational experiences shape us and are hardwired into the neural
architecture of our minds. Consequently, we may become imprisoned in
a 'story' that no longer serves us. Psychotherapy can help us to explore
and reflect upon these formative life experiences in the here-and-now
relationship between client and therapist and utilising the
neuroplasticity of the brain (the capacity to adapt and generate new
neural pathways) we can free ourselves to rewrite these negative 'stories'
or life scripts and create new narratives, leading to increased compassion
for the self and others and the potential for healing and change.

Audrey O’Sullivan

Psychotherapist

I am Audrey O Sullivan and I am an Accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist with the IACP. I completed my training in Humanistic Integrative Psychotherapy in Cork Counselling Centre Training Institute. Prior to joining Oakwood, I was part of the counselling team at University of Limerick. I work from a Humanistic and Integrative approach, this approach focuses on the importance of being your true self in order to lead the most fulfilling life. It’s based on the belief that everyone has their own unique way of looking at the world. This view can impact your choices and actions. This also creates a space for the individual to develop an awareness around what is preventing them from living life to fullest. My approach enables and empowers individuals to explore love, values, self-awareness, choice and human potential. I believe that the therapeutic relationship is very important. I provide a non-judgemental, confidential, listening, empathetic, supportive and safe place to explore and discuss the most difficult of things, even those that are hidden. I provide a strong solid presence to explore and journey with clients through the counselling process. I work on a one to one basis with clients, areas covered (but not limited to) in my work are: anxiety, bereavement and loss, bullying, workplace difficulties, emotional health, general health, depression, self-esteem, family conflict, stress, sexuality, relationship difficulties and trauma. I believe in Carl Rogers quote “WHAT YOU ARE IS GOOD ENOUGH IF YOU WOULD ONLY BE IT OPENLY”.

Ana Pilumian Kelly

Psychotherapist

Accredited Psychotherapist with IACP with ten years experience of working with clients. She has a private practice in Galway and recently rejoined Oakwood team after a maternity leave. Graduated from Tivoli Institute, also trained in Gestalt and has gained additional experience with Galway RCC and helped with supporting team in SATU , Galway. Guest lecturer in GMIT, Castlebar. My Philosophy of Counselling My philosophy of counselling has a strong existential and person-centered framework. I view psychotherapy as a possibility for clients to learn more about themselves, become more aware of their feelings, thoughts and behaviors. To help them recognize their opportunities in life and limitations, to invite them to review their understanding of their personal input into their life. I believe therapy has to combine the best of different orientations. This integration allows me to tailor therapeutic work to suit each client individually according to presenting problem and the personality of the client. Together we look into the difficulties that are present in client’s life and then decide on what would be the most appropriate way of working with it. I acknowledge that our childhood experiences influence the way we are in the world and with the help of psychodynamic framework we connect with the past experiences of the client and see how they are affecting the present. I also find that CBT is an essential tool in challenging thinking patterns to help clients deal with anxiety, phobias, stress, and depression. Gestalt approach is brilliant in exploring what is evident in the here and now and I do draw a lot from this school of thought. I’m a great believer in the power of mindfulness: how to be in the moment and start noticing life, living it – not just dashing through… I trust my clients’ wisdom and respect their decision on how they choose to live their life. I would like to be able to help them to cope with difficulties on their chosen path…

Stephen Butler

Psychotherapist (Intern)

Stephen earned his BSc (Hons) in Counselling and Psychotherapy from Middlesex University, London, and is a fully accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP).

With a humanistic foundation enriched by gestalt, existential and Jungian thought, he works with the deeper parts of the psyche to help clients grow in self-awareness and live with greater purpose and authenticity.

As a reflective and relational therapist who sees the therapeutic process as a collaborative journey; he supports clients in exploring the unconscious patterns and attachment dynamics that shape how you think, feel, and relate to others, helping you move toward greater a awareness, self-acceptance, and emotional freedom.

He works with adults and young people navigating life’s challenges or a sense of disconnection from self. His style is calm, compassionate, and direct;

he believes that meaningful change takes root when we turn inward and meet the deeper truths beneath our struggles,  the place where healing and self-understanding begin to grow.

Janko Skudar

Psychotherapist (Intern)

Janko is a pre-accredited member of IACP and an intern at Oakwood Psychology and Psychotherapy Consultants. He works with adults and is fascinated with how the past impacts the present. Janko graduated from PCI college where he was trained as an integrative therapist. The word integrative implies that Janko uses an individualized, holistic approach to therapy by combining techniques from various therapeutic modalities (humanistic, existential, cognitive behavioural, psychodynamic and gestalt) tailored to the unique needs of each client. The areas of his work include depression, anxiety, bereavement, stress, self-esteem, trauma, relationship issues, problems at work, addictive behaviours, etc.
